Kama Sokolnicka (b. 1978) also appropriates and transforms what seem like familiar spaces. An everyday locale, somewhere in the outskirts, a banal piece of modern industrial architecture – all are transformed by his paintings into places of discovery. By amplifying to absurd lengths the feelings of boredom, isolation or emptiness, these spaces generate an internal process, a “movement of the mind.” According to the artist, her work comes out of a temptation to represent a place that “hardly exists, or nearly doesn’t exist,” and that, by taking on emotional projections, is freed of material limits and becomes a state of mind. Between sensitive observation and abstract form, the artist recreates the idea of architecture as a link between the outside world and our inner selves.
