The intimacy of human presence, latent but intense, also informs the work of the young painter Farah Atassi (b. 1981). Her large-scale canvases project us into a melancholy universe of modern ruins where Mondrian- or Malevich-style interiors are suffused with a strange familiarity. Inspired by photographs of old Russian houses, the artist adumbrates an archetypal modern interior based on the collective imagination. She manages to pick up the subtle memory of these melancholy places which float in a space somewhere between dream and memory. Empty, but overflowing with a ghostly existence that we can sense, her interiors relive history in a loop, repeating its codes and forms ad infinitum and thus giving them a new, exciting life. |
