[I don’t know where I’m going but I do know that I’m walking], 2008, sound installation, 244 x 122 x 244 cm The title and the shape of the piece are extractions from a song and a historical artwork (Acoustic Pressure Piece by Bruce Nauman, 1971). The extraction transforms the corridor into a threshold and the architectural device into an echo chamber. A reversion of the acoustic quality is generated. The panels do not absorb sound any more, but reflect it, blurring the image of that goes through it. This threshold materialises the problem of representation in our minds what is occurring in the present time. Both steel sheets are fixed by means of a black metal structure. The visitor can walk around it, and the piece remains silent. One can decide to go through the two panels - at that point the piece becomes a sound device, recording and recasting with delay the noise of the steps. The ten second-delay reminds the passer-by that he goes forward without knowing exactly where.
Eric Stephany's (1970) practice is based in the certainty that "the future of architecture will not be architectural". Between 2001 and 2003 Stephany has collaborated with Projectiles (a group of architects and artists) in contemporary poetry and architecture projects. In 2005 he created a performance-conversation for 5th Meeting of the Jung European Artists of the Lyon Biennale. Since his first personal exhibition On est enfermés dehors at the Maison Neyrand in Lyon (2006), Stephany has participated in numerous group shows across the Europe : in Sofia (with  ), at La Générale, Paris (The End, The Prediction, The Fortress, The Assault, 2007), at Stand gallery (Lyon), at 10m² gallery (Sarajevo), at La Générale en Manufacture (Sèvres) and at La Ferme du Buisson. Since May 2008 he develops a residency project at Point Éphémère, Paris. |
