For several years, Vladimir Nikolic has attracted international attention
thanks to his artworks which astutely mix humour and elaborate
conceptual layers. It suffices to remember this lively Rhythm (2001)
where five men and women sign themselves with the sign of the cross
in the orthodox tradition to the rhythm of techno beat music or
another Death Anniversary in which three Montenegro mourners that
the artist has purposely made travel, work on singing their ritual litany
on Marcel Duchamp’s grave in Rouen cemetery. This emblematic
work has ended up in the most significant museum collections. The double projection The First Murder by Vladimir Nikolic shows us an emblematic piece of archive footage, the first film report on a high-profile murder, that of Alexander, King of the Serbs in Marseille in 1934. Going back to the scene of the crime, the artist reconstituted the document, keeping the original shots and camera positions. Nikolic thus marks that key moment in the history of images when the media became the new tool for perceiving reality. |
