Beth Campbell, whose work is one of the high-lights of Manifesta 7at
Trente, is part of this new generation of artists preoccupied by
questions linked to the memory, the counter memory and the anxiety
margin induced by this. At the same time she is interested in the
reconnaissance of radical tradition forms and in the pursuit of them.
Her exploration is based on an obsessional quest for self-analysis. "In
the interest of appearances, I produce a painting of myself." In this
way her work attempts to make fairy tales tangible, to live in the virtual
world, to subtly amalgamate what is real and what is artificial.
In her drawings and watercolours, Beth Campbell evokes everyday events with sure intelligence and real mastery of her tools. Here we witness a world that escapes prefabricated, familiar identities, while remaining on the margins of something uncanny.
